How is this possible?

S.D. Governor Signs Abortion Ban Into Law
AP - 2 hours, 32 minutes ago
PIERRE, S.D. - Gov. Mike Rounds signed legislation Monday banning nearly all abortions in South Dakota, setting up a court fight aimed at challenging the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. The bill would make it a crime for doctors to perform an abortion unless the procedure was necessary to save the woman's life. It would make no exception for cases of rape or incest.

Just tell me. How is this possible?

It's shocking and scary. Reproductive freedom has been taken away from the women of SD.

It makes me question (as I know you do) the time and place in which we live. Is this for real?

Sounds like a State's Rights challenge. And SD isn't the only one working on it. Seven or eight other states are moving the same direction as quickly as possible. This is the fight people have been bracing for for years.

Rebecca, while the whole story is shocking and appalling to me, the fact that there will be no exceptions in the case of rape and incest just blows my mind. If a 12 year old girl gets pregnant by her father, she should have that baby? My god!

And, I read other articles that said that in cases of rape, the rapist will then have parental rights. This is so insane to me.

Jen,
I still like you, even if you disagree with my opinion :O)

I was sick to my stomach tonight when I heard about the law being passed. Yes, it may be a battle that has been brewing for years, but we live in America where woman and men have choices. NO one has the right to tell you what you may chose to do with your body and when the government starts regulating your choices based on religion it is more than frightening!

Then to top it off there are no exceptions to rape or incest... a rapist would have the rights to a child!

My heart goes out to the woman of South Dakota because your state has failed you. They have made you once again second class citizens. They have taken your right to chose what is best for you and given it to rapists and molesters. I am sick.

B- Thank you for posting.

I was reading Newsweek tonight. March 6 issue. Martha Brant and Evan Thomas quoted James Bopp,(general counsel of the National Right to Life Committee), "trying to reverse Roe now would be a 'strategic loser.'"

The authors continued to say, "States may have more luck chipping away at abortion. There are bills in many states legislatures to give fetuses 'personhood' and requiring waiting periods and pre-abortion counseling. Some states are considering laws to require women to get an ultrasound image before obtaining an abortion."

Maybe I'm being naive and optimistic, but maybe these chips can stall the issue until people come to their senses. (I personally don't have a problem with a waiting period or counseling. I do think it's cruel to require women to look at an ultrasound.) I certainly respect life, but we MUST respect women and their right to choose.
