I Need Your Help

My neighborhood bookstore that I frequent is offering a four week writer's workshop course. Each session is three hours, and they are led by a well known author. The workshops are geared for those wanting to work on a memoir, and it costs $100. The bookstore is currently accepting applications, and will only accept 8 writers in all. To apply you need to submit 5 pieces of writing.

I originally started this blog with the hopes that it could possibly be turned into a memoir. So.... do you think I should apply? Will it be worth the money? And if so, help me choose 5 blog entries that show quality writing. (If any of it is quality writing.)

If I do someday publish a memoir, it will most certainly be dedicated to all of you. (and Joe, and my family, and T, and the boys. But you'll be mentioned. I promise :O) )

Are you kidding? Of COURSE you should apply!

I think at least 1-2 should be poetry...and you'll want to look for a diversity of topics. I'll try to do some browsing this weekend.

I agree you would be crazy not to apply!!

I also agree with k that you should submit some of your poetry as well as your more poignant submissions.

I'll browse this weekend and vote for some of my fav pieces.

I agree, do it... if nothing else, it could be extremely cathartic. The post that sticks out most in my mind is somewhere back when you explained the days before and after Joe's death. Those posts are powerful.

Before even reading the comments especially Allison's, I immediately thought of your posts, well story, of Joe and what happened. That was high on my list of the most honest writing I've ever read. Something my Mom would call emotionally brutal. And it was. Not in the bad sense that it reads, but that it made one feel, and that's not something to many people can do. Go for it. You have talent, and if your not picked, I'll come over and poke em in the eye for you ;)

Definitely Joe's story. I've just finished reading a poetry novel (by Dorothy Porter who's written several of these inventions of hers) and I really enjoy the genre, so I definitely agree with including some poetry.

as promised, i'm back with some entry suggestions for you. i know i'm in the minority, but i respectfully disagree about submitting joe's story - and i'll tell you why. i think it is too personal for the application stage. OF COURSE you will share it with the workshop if you are selected. But if you submit it, and then for some reason are not selected (i can't think of why this could be, but let's just say), i think it would be very painful. Just my opinion, please feel free to completely disagree or disregard. Having said that, the entries I found very well written and poignant obviously express the gaping whole in your heart, without being so revealing about the details (and i picked a couple of lighter ones too).

The deadline is May 30th, and the classes start the first week in June, so my guess is I'll know by next week. Also, the reason I was able to submit so many entries, was that we were allowed up to 25 pages. Thanks again for your help!
