Since I value your opinions so greatly
I would love for you to weigh in on
my new kitchen counters

I found one that I love
Tell me your thoughts

This is my current laminate counter top
It is ugly and outdated
This is the granite that I picked out
What do you think? Be honest, b/c I need to pick something good for resale,
as we don't plan on staying here more than a few more years.
a view from afar
the color of my dining room is the same
as the color in the kitchen

backsplash?
The colored diamonds would be in the stone, not sticking out
and the stone would be 4x4 not 1x1

Honestly?

I prefer smaller mottling -- look at the photo of my hand in my "Consumer review" post.

The house I'm in now has larger mottling, and I don't like the way it looks -- some parts of it always look like there's dirt or crud or dried food.

I like the colors ... can you find something with smaller mottling? Are you set on granite? I chose quartz (Zodiaq by DuPont) for my Maryland house, because it has all the good qualities of granite, plus bigger range of colors, plus it needs no sealing.

You asked for honesty! ;-)

I did ask for honesty! thank you! I don't know what mottling means though :O)

Mottling is the color variations ... big blots of color versus little ones.

Also, I just looked at your cabinets.

I would use a lighter color, something to contrast with the wood color, rather than be close in color to it.

Something in the top two rows of this page:

I don't like the light colors so much. My eye wemt directly to the fourth and fifth rows!

Thanks for your input.

Yup, mine's from the 4th row, cinnamon spice. What do you think of Galaxy Black or Meteor Grey?

I'll shut up now.

Love the colors in the granite, and they really complement your cabinets. I'm with Alicia...I prefer the smaller mottling.

I don't quite understand what you are planning to do with the backsplash...4x4s, but colored tile with more plain tile, or how? I do like the colors you posted.

Be ready for dust EVERYWHERE...we replaced our flooring and backsplash in our new house. We had hoped to have it all done before moving in but it didn't work out that way.

I would have to say that I don't think I prefer the possible new ones to the old... too dark. I have no advice on other colors to look for though. Also, I hear our smartboard has been installed.

I think that the granite you chose is good for large spaces or a big island. I'd choose a solid color or a stone with a less bold "pattern" for a smaller counterspace. I also think that s single color backsplash will be less busy and wouldn't compete with any pattern you might have in the counter. I say all this because you mentioned resale. We did white subway tiles and absolute black granite counters and our house sold in 10 days. I think that, when it comes to resale, classic and basic will appeal to more people than interesting and colorful. Just my two cents. This is the longest comment I've ever posted and it's about counters.

I think that if you painted the cabinets a creamy color that the granite would look great. Sorry but I think the color of the cabinets is dated and won't show well with granite.

Whew, what a relief! It's so much more fluid an experience when you give an opinion that is actually asked for. This however won't stop me from giving future unsolicited ones :)

I did not like what appears to be a lot of rust/orange/red color in your larger mottled granite sample :)

I have been hearing great things about quartz countertops over materials like stone and granite and on a quick Googy search found this:

http://www.silestoneusa.com/care/faq.cfm?ID=SI

which among other fantastical information tells us that coloring is more consistent and maintenance is easier. I LOVE EASY MAINTENANCE. Too many people overlook this factor. And some stones and granites need to be sealed every x number of years and cleaned with specific products.

Having said all this, if you're selling the house, if even in 3-4 years you shouldn't go high end. Mid-end is good enough. And from color perspective get something in a neutral category.

DAMMS I LOVES ME SOME HOME RENOVATION PROJECTS!!!

Actually that won't look bad once it's all laid out despite the concerns many have here. I've seen many houses here in New Zealand with that bench top and those coloured cabinets and it looks more natural and more earthy. It really depends on what you like I guess but it does look good rather than trying to compare it by a single tile.

Once again I've seen similar tiling in bathrooms here in New Zealand although from the glimpse of the middle photo I'm guessing your intention is to have it in the kitchen?

I'm not sure if tiled floors are the best in a kitchen because the grouting is notorious for collecting crud in it.

To be 100% honest I love your hardwood floors in your dining room and feel it's a travesty to try and cover that up with cold heartless tiles. If the hardwood carries into the kitchen then I would be more inclined to keep them and maybe give them a varnish. It's cheaper and much nicer looking.

That being said I'm not sure what Americans go for. New Zealand is a more earthy sort of country and if we cover up our hardwood floors we tend to do it with either lino or wool carpet (both of which I feel are travesties).

LW,

I'm not covering up any hardwood! No worries. The stone is for the walls above the counters and below the cabinets.

not loving it.
maybe carol and mom could go with you.

I'm with Becca. The tone is off in the back splash compared to the tile you picked...I'd look for something with smaller molting and a more consistent color because of the size of your kitchen.

Owen has a good point about resale...the more basic the better.

What ever you guys pick will improve what you have and look great.

Okay I justed posted on your latest post before I scrolled down... I like the countertops with your cupboards very nice for resale.... have you considered a smaller glass tile for the backdrop? It looks more modern and clean... and with all that time I had in the hospital I watched tons for remodel and resale home shows and glass tile seems to be a hit... and it looks awesome
